Medicare Part A and B cover essential medical and hospital services, but do not cover services such as prescription drugs, eye/dental care, or long-term hospice care. Medicare Advantage Plans or Medigap Insurance can help meet those needs.

Medicare Part C, also called a Medicare Advantage Plan, is a contract with a private company to provide supplemental coverage. These plans generally include Part A, B, and D, while also covering a wider array of healthcare needs. Many plans include dental care, long-term care, and other items not included in Original Medicare. These offer the most coverage and are generally the most cost effective.

This is a supplemental coverage plan that helps cover additional out-of-pocket costs. It covers almost all costs that Medicare doesn’t, along with some others. Like Medicare Advantage, enrollment in these plans is through a private insurance company. These plans are often combined with Part D Prescription Drug Coverage to meet a participant’s needs.

Unlike Medicare Advantage plans, Medigap insurance is standardized by the government. There are 10 plans, categorized by letter. The plans are consistent across the states, each plan with the same letter composed of the same benefits. Some plans cover all deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance, while others leave costs for you to cover yourself. Like a Medicare Advantage plan, you can enroll in a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan at any time.
